President's Office

Charles Stokes - President & CEO

Charles Stokes joined the CDC Foundation as executive director when the Foundation began operating in 1995. Under his leadership, the CDC Foundation has grown from a staff of two to a staff of more than 40 professionals managing approximately 200 public health programs in partnership with CDC. He is currently president and CEO of the Foundation.  Prior to joining the CDC Foundation, Mr. Stokes worked for 22 years with the Missouri Department of Health, serving as deputy director for the Department from 1983 through 1995. Stokes chaired the American Public Health Association’s expert panel that developed Healthy Communities 2000, a set of model standards used by many state and local health departments throughout the U.S. He also served on the Staff Advisory Council to the National Governors Association’s Task Force on Universal Health Care, the board of the Public Health Foundation, and the editorial board of the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. He is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Public Issues for the Ad Council and the National Advisory Board of Harvard’s National Preparedness Leadership Initiative.

Chloe Knight Tonney - Senior Vice President for External Affairs

Chloe Knight Tonney joined the CDC Foundation in 2002. Tonney has 22 years of experience in nonprofit advancement, strategy and management, with more than 17 years experience specifically in building support for higher education and scientific institutions. Prior to joining the CDC Foundation, she was the director of leadership gifts at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, overseeing a six-fold growth in attracting resources and partners to the institution. She is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and Phi Beta Kappa and is the immediate past president of the National Alpha Delta Pi Foundation.

Programs

Verla S. Neslund, J.D.* - Vice President for Programs

Verla S. Neslund joined the CDC Foundation in 2005. Prior to joining the CDC Foundation, she served as CDC’s first Chief Learning Officer. Before her appointment as Chief Learning Officer, Ms. Neslund was former CDC Director Dr. Gerberding’s Acting Chief of Staff from November 2002-November 2003. Neslund’s first position in CDC's Office of the Director was as director of CDC’s Executive Secretariat Office, a position she accepted in September 2001. She began her career at CDC in 1983 as an attorney advisor in CDC’s Office of the General Counsel, and served as CDC’s Deputy Legal Advisor from 1990-2001. Neslund has published numerous articles on law and public health issues in noted publications such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, and is co-author of several textbook chapters on surveillance and public health law.

Shannon Easley joined the CDC Foundation in September 2004. Before joining the CDC Foundation, she served as public relations coordinator for the Georgia Public Library Service. Prior to the Library Service, she served as communications manager for Hands On Atlanta. Easley also has experience working with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Florida Children’s Campaign.

Alan D. Harrison, M.S. - Vice President for Administration

Alan Harrison joined the CDC Foundation in 2009. Harrison has nearly 25 years of for-profit and nonprofit experience. Before joining the CDC Foundation he served as director of operations for the Georgia Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. Prior to that, he worked in the water treatment and disinfection industries, most recently as director of industrial water technology for BioLab, Inc. Harrison is a member of the Atlanta Society of Human Resource Managers and an active Cub Scout leader.
