Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use
As one of a number of partners in the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, the CDC Foundation works with experts at CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) to implement the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). GATS monitors adult tobacco use and the effectiveness of tobacco control measures among adults in more than a dozen countries that account for approximately two-thirds of the world’s smokers.
Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition
Approximately 4.6 million Americans are chronically infected with hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus, resulting in 11,000 to 15,000 hepatitis-related deaths per year. The Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition is a group of private-sector organizations organized by the CDC Foundation to support CDC's efforts to combat viral hepatitis by linking the innovation and resources of the private sector with the access and expertise of CDC.
Heads Up Training for Healthcare Providers and Parents
Through a CDC Foundation partnership with the National Football League (NFL), CDC has launched “Heads Up to Clinicians: Addressing Concussion in Sports among Kids and Teens,” a free online course for health care professionals. The course expands on CDC’s “Heads Up” program which aims to reduce the risk for concussion among young people participating in sports.
Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients
Through a CDC Foundation collaboration with Amgen, CDC is leading a comprehensive program focused on providing information, action steps and tools for patients, their families, and their healthcare providers to reduce the risk of developing potentially life-threatening infections during chemotherapy treatment. Studies show that 10 percent of cancer patients undergoing treatment end up hospitalized due to infection, and every two hours a patient dies from this complication.
